Married Teacher Pleads Guilty Of Having Sex With A 17-Year-Old Student
A married Texas science teacher who was arrested on charges of having sex with a 17-year-old student filed a guilty plea with a judge. Sarah Fowlkes, 28, was arrested in March 2017 for allegedly associating an illicit relationship with an unidentified student. She was accused of having participated in “sexual relations with the intention of awakening or satisfying the sexual desire of” the alleged victim.
After her arrest, Fowlkes was suspended from her job at Lockhart High School in Texas. If she is found guilty of the alleged illicit relationship during a trial, she must face up to 20 years behind bars.
Fowlkes was in a Caldwell County courthouse on Wednesday to present her guilty plea, which the judge has not yet accepted, KVUE reported. If the reason is accepted, Fowlkes must serve a deferred sentence of 4 years, turn in her teaching license and pay a fine. The amount of the proposed fine has not yet been released.
In Texas, deferred adjudication is a type of conditional release. If the term is completed successfully, the person will not have a sentence in their record.
The judge said Wednesday it could take up to eight weeks to consider Fowlkes’ guilty plea. If he refused to accept the terms, het lawyer, Jason Nassour, said he would withdraw the motive.
Fowlkes made headlines after her mugshot, in which she sported an ear-to-ear smile, went public. At the time, Nassour said that she was ‘smiling because she knows she is innocent.’
“This isn’t a guilty person sitting there as if she had been captured,” Nassour told KXAS. “When everything develops, it will not be as it seems.”
Fowlkes, who worked as a biology teacher at Lockhart High School since October 2014, was admitted to Caldwell County Prison a few hours after celebrating her birthday with her husband.
The Lockhart police had obtained an order for Fowlkes that surrendered. Nassour added that Fowlkes “was arrested in a statement by a 17-year-old boy without corroborating evidence.”
Police say they found evidence of messages exchanged between her and the student. “Their contact was sexual by nature,” police said.
